Friends of BJP: The Road Ahead: My Answers

Here are my answers to the three questions I had asked last Friday.

1. What are the 2-3 big issues that will present the most challenges and opportunities for India?

  • Quality Education
  • Jobs Creation
  • Urbanisation (moving India’s rural people to livable new cities)
  • Corruption

2. Which ideas/issues would resonate most with the youth in this decade — those issues which will fire them up to actively work towards their own and India’s development?

  • Building a Better India – with pride in our culture and power in our actions
  • Getting youth to be participative in local governance issues

3. Which matters should we focus on in the next 10 years? These should be achievable and must be important for India’s development.

  • Education
  • Urban and Rural Infrastructure
  • Creating Opportunities for people
  • Eliminating Corruption from the highest levels of India’s government
  • Creating an open, transparent real-time government

  1. Rajesh,

    > Which matters should we focus on in the next 10 years?
    > Creating an open, transparent real-time government

Our politicians are good at publishing election agenda, making lofty promises and then forget about it till the next election.

There is no effective means of tracking the work done by the bureaucracy.

If we can create an online system to

    a. maintain the record of the promises
    b. keep track of the real work done (if any) and
    c. hold public audits

then that would be a great service to our nation.

An effective feedback system that exposes lack of work, highlights good work and closes the loopholes would help steer our country to real progress.

  2. 1. Pushing for Regional Language Enabled Computing / broadband / telecom – Will be both aspiration driver and market driver. And will help drive grass roots politics because the cost of engagement becomes cheaper.

    2. Creation of Urban corridors and Travel Infra structure – will remove the angst and pain of daily living and create opportunities where none existed. The ecological cost is however going to be high.

    3. Thrust on Mechanised Farming and Agricultural Cold Storage – Will bring glamor and eficiencies to this sector and make its constituents willing workers than beasts of burden.

    4. Better delivery of quality educational inputs – the challenge is to reach the same quality to all students and thus provide true and meaningful equality at all student levels. And help take the edge off the elitism of English Language education. Most importantly will help create and nurture real geniuses than the brain drained wizards that currently populate the IIX’s.

    5. Uniform civil code as practice and constitution. It will form a liberational tool for all India and will bind its citizens to the feeling of being a nation.Dont let anyone’s religion or local habits dictate his national rights and duties.

    6. Volunteerism, the apolitical leaders of society should set examples for others to follow…create social conscience. Because governance was thrust upon our people most of us do not have one, now or historically, we have no issues with government as long as they dont have any with us.

    7. Thrust on hitechnology areas other than computer software, could be genetics, could be hardware, textiles, could be manufacturing.

    8. Create mechanisms to ensure and monitor transaparency in government, we already have the tools at hand. This will certainly drive out corruption at the lower levels where it affects the common citizen. High level corruption will never go away. It will stay because it is so easy and so private. Let us not waste our energies fighting that.

  3. I think the only issue is delivery and repeatability.

Rajesh has very rightly pointed out key areas where BJP must promise to deliver and at every single opportunity it must deliver.

What exactly needs to be done in the areas Rajesh has listed is best left to experts and I am sure down the line Friends of BJP can come up with more concrete ideas.

However just the CMM levels in software industry stress on “repeatability” of performance it is very high time that BJP exhibits this quality.

What Modi can do in Gujarat, any BJP CM in country must be able to do it. Party should not rely on personal heroics but rely on it’s processes to deliver.

  4. I suppose the debate is not so much with the issues that you have outlined. In fact, there would be hardly any disagreement across the entire political spectrum in this regard. The question is what public policy initiatives and solutions do you propose to target these problems and how different are these be from those offered currently. Perhaps you could use this forum to test market and fine tune proposals to that effect.
For example on the question of education one proposal would be school vouchers that can be encashed by the holder at the school of his choice (whether private or public).
Similarly, take the case of food security. Just like the school voucher, how about food stamps that can be encashed by the holder at the shop of his choice at market prices?
Take yet another example that of fertilizer subsidies. Perhaps it is time to change tack and subsidize the user (i.e. the farmer) rather than the fertilizer producer? How about agricultural stamps to help cover the costs of agricultural resources like water, seeds, fertilizer, electricity etc.. The mix and proportion of these ingredients is left completely to the farmer. However, he purchases these at market prices.
Now these suggestions are by no means perfect. There is an element of patronage and they are certainly not immune to fraud, but I think they provide a greater sense of empowerment to the recipient and should for that reason find greater resonance among the public than the current system.

  5. Politicians have given themselves too many liberties, facilities and too much power. They need to be made to realise that after all they are civil servants ‘par excellence’ and the time has come to make them work within the bounds of corrective rules and regulations and strict accountability. They should be stripped off luxurious facilities. They are being paid from public money to deliver for the good of the people and the nation and not not above all else for the party and themselves. They are not paid to rob the people they are paid for nor delve in corrupt practices wherever they wish.
The religious sector is still not investing enough to relieve the masses of their day- to- day harassments despite wielding enormous funds mostly not accounted for…..
