Elections 2009: Low Voting from Middle India (Part 2)

Continuing with the discussion on the reasons and possible solutions for the Middle Indian’s disconnect with the democratic process in India:

  • Voter Registration Process needs Simplification: There are plenty of stories of people who tried to register but could not, and those who just gave up because they found the proces cumbersome. This process needs serious attention and needs to be made easier. It also needs to account for mobility — people move homes within cities, and across cities. Until this is made quicker and simpler, we will be leaving an increasing number of Indians out of the political process.
  • Voter Lists need to be Accurate: My own story is a case in point here. And there are many others. Once listed or registered, there should be no way names should be disappearing. I am pretty sure there are technology glitches in the system – and these need to be investigated and fixed right away.
