Elections 2009: Low Voting from Middle India (Part 2)

May 6th, 2009 · 3 Comments

Continuing with the discussion on the reasons and possible solutions for the Middle Indian’s disconnect with the democratic process in India:

  • Voter Registration Process needs Simplification: There are plenty of stories of people who tried to register but could not, and those who just gave up because they found the proces cumbersome. This process needs serious attention and needs to be made easier. It also needs to account for mobility — people move homes within cities, and across cities. Until this is made quicker and simpler, we will be leaving an increasing number of Indians out of the political process.
  • Voter Lists need to be Accurate: My own story is a case in point here. And there are many others. Once listed or registered, there should be no way names should be disappearing. I am pretty sure there are technology glitches in the system – and these need to be investigated and fixed right away.

My own experience with voter registration was rather pleasant. I filled up a form online, attached a scanned photo and received my EPIC a few weeks later.

I agree on the Voter list bit, my name disappeared as well. Ive heard ( could be inaccurate) that the names are entered on a MS Word doc….now that can easily be tampered with…once the list is created they should pdf it so that it can’t be messed around…the technology behind the voter id lists needs to be improved!

Voter Registration Process needs Simplification: Very well pointed out. Govt advertises in bold in newspapers that electoral exercise is underway, but officials are not properly trained. There is gross violations of putting authentic details in the voter cards.

Also since voter id card is a proof of identity, the name in my card is typed wrong not to ask about the other details.
