Internet Portals

March 30th, 2010 · 6 Comments

I was talking to a few friends about their Internet portals that they run. The Internet portals business is about three things:

  1. Reach: the raw numbers for a basic free service (on desktop and mobile web)
  2. Ads: how can we monetise the free services attention via ads
  3. More: how the free user can be monetised either through premium products (subscriptions) or via transactions (commerce)

On the Internet, portals have mostly focused only on 1 and 2. By itself, just web ad revenue is not good enough to cover the costs or to scale operations. This limits the portals capability to scale. The challenge in India is to also think about how to build 3.

Somehow most Indian portals fail to do understand what it takes to get your third point right. There are crude attempts. I used to do extensively online shopping while in UK, US, most of my experience in India is average and below average and I almost stopped trusting any Indian portal. The whole ecosystem works in a mediocre way and there is hardly any customer care / service culture.

Sometimes I wonder if it way beyond the ability of any Indian.

Indians are a bit resistant to pay for the services they use. I myself was a bit resistant to pay and use some service I wanted and always searched for a free alternative. I have observed this particular behavior among many people. The reason for this was once told to me by my boss, who says that majority of the Indians are getting handful of money only in the recent years. So it will take some time to get adjusted to a spending culture.

I wish to disagree with Sundar. Indian online shopping portals are very good and most of them offer things cheaper than the market price then. Their service is quick and the things are brand new.

The information you share about the Internet Portal is quite good and rewarding for me. Help me open my knowledge.
