SaaS / Cloud Computing

September 8th, 2008 · 9 Comments

One of my other interest areas is providing software-as-a-service for SMEEMs (SMEs in Emerging Markets). In recent times, cloud computing has become a more fashionable way to refer to the ASP (application service provider) business. In India, given the lack of legacy in terms of IT deployment that exists in many SMEs, there is a powerful opportunity to get them to leapfrog to using services from the cloud which are also mobile-enabled from day one.

Another way to think of this is as an “Enterprise IT Operator” offering a wide array of services. Here are some that I can think of:

  • Computing
    • Desktop Network Computer
  • Connectivity / Communications
    • DSL
    • Fixed-Mobile Convergence
  • Server Infra and Apps
    • OS, Desktop Apps
    • Collaboration Apps / Document Sharing
    • Business Apps: Accounting / CRM •
  • Cloud Services
    • VPN; Backup
    • Remote Desktops (Windows / Linux)
    • Video Conferencing
  • Mobilising Apps
    • Email, CRM, SFA… -Integration of Mobility into Business Processes (eg. Email2SMS, Alerts)
  • Mobile Marketing
    • Mobile Presence
    • Ads, Leads, Transactions
  • AppStore (for ISVs)

    Bharti recently announced this service:

However, I believe that for SMEs to trust their entire computing network to the availability of DSL would be too risky given the service we have seen here.

Saas is percieved as a big opporutunity and is evoking lot of interest among the xSP’s, IT SI’s with exisitng NoC’s and Small VAR’s. All these vendaors are likely to compete for space in the opportunity which is yet to pick up and quantified.

Was wanting to ask your opnion on who is best positoned to exploit this emerging opportunity (ie a telco service provider who banks on his network or IT service provider who has the application skills and can bring multiple services (apps, IT infra & support services))
