Assembly Elections – Part 3

The so-called “semi-finals” have yielded some fascinating results.

Once again, the people of Uttar Pradesh have given a decisive mandate to one party even though there were four in the fray. Hopefully, the SP will focus on development and good governance, and fulfill the aspirations of the people. It won’t be easy, given their past track record. But perhaps, they can learn from the successful model of Gujarat over the past decade.

Punjab, Manipur and Goa too returned decisive verdicts. Once again, governments have to deliver. SAD-BJP have their task cut-out in view of the heightened expectations in people by not succumbing to anti-incumbency. Goa cast a clear vote against corruption in favour of BJP and Manohar Parrikar.

Uttarakhand has a split verdict, and it should be clear soon who will form the government.

Plenty of food for thought and introspection by all the parties. But as is always the case in Indian political parties, no one will really take responsibility for the losses and it will be business as usual for top leaders.
